Interview with Margie Didal - Red Bull Drop In South America

Breaking news: the Red Bull Drop In Tour video just dropped! Get ready to watch the Red Bull team shred across South America and hit epic spots in Brazil, Argentina and Chile, spreading their contagious energy and love for skating everywhere.

The Red Bull Drop In Tour: heavy crew!

Featuring Leticia Bufoni, Margie Didal, Yndiara Asp, Aldana Bertran and the rest of the crew, this video is sure to get you hyped and ready to grab your board and hit the streets.

Margie Didal - Heelflip in São Paulo

To tell us all about their Latin American adventure first hand, we got to have a little catch-up with Margie Didal.

This was exciting: it’s not every day that you get to speak with an olympian skater from the Philippines; in fact, Margie is one of the most accomplished pros to come out of this country of any gender and despite her young age she’s already an icon and inspiration for skater boys and girls alike.

In the Island of Cebu, where she’s from, they still don’t have a skatepark, but now she gets to spend her life shredding around the globe alongside other gnarly skaters. So grab my hand, ‘cause I’m excited. Let’s talk with Margie Didal and find out all about the Red Bull Drop In Tour - and a little about herself too.

Margie Didal - Ollie in São Paulo

Hey Margie! How are you doing right now and what have you been up to these days?

I'm good, went on vacation after the tour, but still doing some trips before the holidays!

The Red Bull Drop In Tour video just came out and it’s sick. How was the tour, what were the highlights of the trip?

The Red Bull Drop In Tour was really fun, we went to South America to São Paulo and Floripa in Brazil, Buenos Aires in Argentina and the rest of the team went to Chile too. I couldn’t join the crew in Chile, because I needed a visa and couldn’t get it on time, but it was pretty fun. The tour was like ten days but I was still doing some other trips, so a total of two months. Lots of highlights! It was my first time in Argentina and we had BBQ for dinner with the whole team. It was a full experience ‘cause they cooked it in front of us with the chef Lele Cristobal!

Even though we have a different culture and language, we connect and understand each other through skateboarding”

Sandboarding session at Yndi’s

How is it, skating and hanging out with the other girls in the Red Bull team? What’s a cool memory you have from the trip?

Skating with other female Red Bull athletes is fun, like Leticia and Yndi. A funny memory was we did sandboarding at Yndi's backyard, we had a sesh and I ate shit even though it was only a small hill!

Were you there when Yndi broke her arm?

I was at the same park but I wasn't there when it happened. Yndi and Leticia were having a sesh on a bank to ledge and they were trying to get a photo but then she kinda landed on her arm. I didn’t stay long where they at cause I'm scared and try not to think about injuries.

Margie Didal - Backside flip in Buenos Aires

That backside flip on a crusty bank in Buenos Aires looked sick. What was your favorite spot on the tour?

Thanks! Not really a favorite spot but I like the bank I was skating with Ryan Decenzo, where I did kickflip to fakie and bs bigspin, ‘cause it's fun and we had a good sesh there.

How does street skating in South America compare with street skating in the Philippines?

Almost the same, some crusty ground but it depends who you skating with. Like with Red Bull skaters, especially T-Puds, he makes the spots skateable.

Did anyone see that coming? Backside feeble manual kickflip out

Are there many girls skating in the Philippines?

There were a few female skaters when I started skating, but there wasn’t a female category in every contest so I just skated against men. Now it's getting normal for girls to skate and it's getting bigger.

Now that you’ve been all around the world, what do you think skateboarding in your home country needs in order to keep growing?

Some islands and cities in the Philippines have skateparks already, except mine! But for real, in my hometown, we still don't have a skatepark. I travel a lot, but every time I go on vacation, I bring my board and I do some little skate clinics with the locals.

Even though you’re always on tour, you’re still very connected to your family and girlfriend. Do you still live back home in Cebu City? How important is home and family for you?

Yes, I still live in Cebu City. My fiancé and family are so important! After a long trip I have something to look forward to when I get home and they’re my motivation to do well.

"My fiancé and family are my motivation to do well"

Margie, Buenos Aires

Besides working, filming and contests, what’s your absolute favorite thing about skateboarding?

It's fun and that's how I express myself and being able to express myself makes me Margie Didal.

Why should the people reading this interview drop everything and go watch the Red Bull Drop In Tour video right now?

‘Cause it's fuuuuun!!! And also for other people to know that even though we have a different culture and language, we connect and understand each other through skateboarding.

What are you waiting for? Go on and watch the Red Bull Drop In Tour video right now!
